A city worth reading.
Not a list to tick off.

Organize the stages around the time you have. Alternate monuments, transfers and breaks: in Venice even the journey is part of the visit.

Reasoned paths

How much time do you spend in Venice?

Choose a starting track. The durations depend on your pace, the stops and any waits at the entrances.

  1. Morning · San MarcoStart from the square and dedicate a separate visit to the Basilica, first checking the tourist access.
  2. Afternoon · Rialto and San PoloProceed on foot through the Mercerie, then cross the Grand Canal on the Rialto Bridge.
  3. Return · The Grand Canal from the waterEvaluate the vaporetto based on your starting point and the lines actually in service.
Before the Basilica

Go in prepared.

The Basilica is an active place of worship. Celebrations and liturgical needs can change tourist routes.

  • Respectful clothing, with shoulders and knees covered.
  • Check updated baggage regulations.
  • Check which environments the chosen title includes.

Entrance fees and visit titles

A pass doesn't open every door.

Entrance to the Basilica, museum tours and public transport may require separate tickets. Don't assume a city pass includes San Marco.

A booked access does not necessarily eliminate security checks. Rates and times must be confirmed with the manager.

Lagoon life

Bridges, landing places and seasonal changes.

The shortest route on the map is not always the most convenient: bridges, luggage and crowding affect travel.

  • In summer, plan for water, shade and breaks during the hottest hours.
  • In the cool months consider humidity and possible changes in tide level.
  • For mobility needs, check the accessibility of the individual stage.
  • Store personal belongings in crowded places and do not stay on narrow bridges.

clear information.

sant-mrk basillic is an information portal dedicated to Venice, the Basilica of San Marco and the places that help to understand the city.

We collect useful information to prepare an independent visit: access, behaviour, connections and route choices. We distinguish editorial suggestions from the conditions established by the managers.

The company is based in Milan. We do not represent the Basilica, the Municipality of Venice or the transport operators.

Report an update

First, the manager

For times, tickets and limitations, please refer to the organization that manages the place or service. His communications prevail over the portal's summaries.

Then, the context

A celebration, a high tide or a change in service can change the schedule. We invite you to recheck the conditions close to departure.

Finally, your pitch

The itineraries are suggestions, not guaranteed services. We leave room for breaks, accessibility and personal interests.

Directions in practice

Three choices that change the visit.

We do not publish undocumented testimonials or evaluations. Here are three concrete situations to which our indications provide answers.

The first time

San Marco, without overlapping the entrances.

Check the Basilica and Palazzo Ducale separately. Leave a margin between time slots and consider checks before scheduling the second visit.

The criterion: margin in the program
With luggage in tow

Fewer bridges, more attention to the journey.

Before choosing the route to your accommodation, identify the useful landing place and check the baggage transport conditions. A walk may include many steps.

The criterion: real comfort
A day on the islands

The return is planned in advance.

Check the updated timetables for each route. Don't build the day on the last available trip and evaluate how wind or changes in service could affect the return.

The criterion: verified connections
